Tips For Marble Care And Cleaning

When you think of marble, you probably think about strength and durability. Unfortunately, it's not as impervious to damage as you might think. In fact, marble can be pretty delicate. You have to be careful how you clean and maintain marble to avoid causing damage during the cleaning process. Here are a few tips for those new to marble care and maintenance.

General Care Tips

No matter what kind of marble you're cleaning, there are a few things that will apply no matter what. For example, you should always check the care instructions from the manufacturer before you use any products on the marble. Those instructions will tell you if there's anything that will void your marble's warranty.

You should also avoid ever using anything abrasive, acidic, sharp, or otherwise damaging on the surface of your marble. Marble can scratch and damage pretty easily if you're not careful. Make sure that you are careful about the way you handle it. Ensure that the marble you have is properly sealed. The sealant layer will protect the marble from staining, discoloration, and surface damage. You'll have to re-apply the sealant every year or two, so check with the manufacturer to find out how often they recommend it.

Proper Cleaning Steps

When it comes to keeping marble clean, you need to take the right steps. Start by choosing a mild cleaner that's designed specifically for marble and stone. That way, you won't have to worry about it eroding the surface or causing any damage. Clean the marble regularly, at least once a week or more often if it's in a heavy use area. If you don't want to buy a commercial cleaning product, you can create a solution in a reusable spray bottle that will work. Mix warm water with a tablespoon or two of a gentle dish detergent. Shake it well, then use that mixture to clean the marble.

Use microfiber cloths to clean the surface. Wipe it down gently, rinse everything with clean water, then make sure you dry it completely as well. Don't leave the marble to air dry, as this will cause water spots. Not to mention, if there are any spots where the sealant didn't quite stick, it could leave the marble exposed to absorb that water. Marble is an elegant addition to almost any home, but it needs proper care to always look its best. The more you understand about keeping your marble clean, the better.
