3 Signs Your Boiler Is Failing

Your boiler is what makes those long cold nights nice and cozy. It is important that a boiler is well maintained and regularly checked because a faulty boiler can have drastic consequences. For instance, a faulty boiler can actually emit carbon monoxide, which in large amounts can suffocate a person. It is important that you continually check your boiler for any problems. Here are a few thing to look for when inspecting your boiler, but also what these different signs can actually mean.

Carbon Monoxide

You do not want your boiler putting off carbon monoxide, and there are a few different ways that you can check your boiler. The first thing that you want to do is look at the flame. The flame should burn a nice rich blue. If the flame is not burning properly then it will be a yellow or orange color. If this is the case then your boiler may be putting off carbon monoxide.

You may also notice that there is soot above or below the flame. This is another very important indicator that the flame is not burning properly and needs to be inspected and fixed. If your home utilizes a boiler, it is a very good idea to get a carbon monoxide monitor.

You will want to check the age of your boiler, and see if it is over 15 years old. Usually boilers can last 15 to 20 years, but any more than this and they really start to go downhill. One of the most common problems is they start to lose any energy efficiency. This translates into a much higher energy bill for you.

The amount of extra money that you spend each month from a non-energy efficient boiler can really add up. If your boiler is over 15 years of age, have a technician inspect the boiler to ensure it is still functioning, but know it may be almost time to replace the boiler.

Usually the sound of your boiler heating up is a blur, and blends in with background noise. However, if there is something wrong you will likely hear it immediately. Most of the time when you hear clunking or whining it is due to a faulty fan or your pump. These are the types of repairs that need to be completed by companies like Purvis And Foster Inc. If you find that you are making more repairs each year, and the repairs are really starting to add up, replace your boiler.
